An Intelligent Alternative to Building Dozens of Above Ground Tanks

Until Converge Midstream commenced operations, all existing commercial crude oil storage in the Houston area had been in above-ground tank storage. While above ground storage has its purpose, it is extremely wasteful of space compared to underground storage—and is also not protected from catastrophic events such as hurricanes and floods, which have so adversely affected other types of oil storage facilities in the past. Underground storage is highly economical in terms of land area utilization, has less impact on the environment, and provides natural barriers from weather-related events.
